August Macke was one of the foremost members of the German Expressionist group The Blue Rider. He lived during a mostly innovative time for German art and saw the development of the German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the following avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him. His style was formed within the mode of French Impressionism and Post-impressionism and later went through a Fauve period. Macke's meeting with Robert Delaunay in Paris in 1912 was to be a sort of revelation for him with Delaunay's chromatic Cubism, which Apollinaire had called Orphism. August Macke's oeuvre can be considered as Expressionism and also as part of Fauvism. The paintings concentrate primarily on expressing feelings and moods rather than reproducing objective reality, usually distorting color and form.

I came across this quite by accident. Had never heard his name listed or saw any of his art. One day I was reading an article about the artist Paul Klee. It was describing a journey to Morocco I believe. It made it sound like some of the best art in the world happened on the trip. August Macke was listed and a yellow and red picture of Moroco blew me away. His painting was amazing. His love for his mother came through many of the examples. But the colours, oh the colours were so fine I swore I was looking at some secret life of Derain. His story is tragic, his art is amazing. Spend $1.99 and get this book. I have viewed it 3 times in 24 hours. Bargain is the only way to describe it.Product details

Excellent balance color composition well described
